PET vs HDPE: Which Plastic Bottle Fits Your Fill?

PET and HDPE are the two workhorse plastics behind most bottled products, and it's easy to assume they're interchangeable. They're not — the right choice depends on clarity needs, chemical resistance, and cost.

PET: clarity and shelf appeal

PET is naturally transparent and glossy, which is why it dominates beverages, water, and household liquids where customers want to see the product. It's also lightweight and impact-resistant, keeping shipping costs down.

HDPE: opacity and chemical resistance

HDPE is naturally opaque (usually white or natural), which makes it the default for detergents, industrial fluids, and anything that degrades under light. It also handles a broader range of aggressive chemicals than PET.

A quick rule of thumb

If your customer needs to see the product, or you're filling a beverage, start with PET. If you're filling something caustic, acidic, or light-sensitive, start with HDPE.
